I Am From

I am from pink and green stripes on the bedroom wall
From bubblegum toothpaste and bandaids
I am from the warm, light rooms
Smelling of pumpkin, of fall, and of home.
I am from the bleeding hearts
And the golden-brown prairie
Whose paths are worn from years of adventure.

I'm from small noses and brown eyes
From Junior Roff and Pello Wello
I'm from clumsiness and dry humor
And certainly from competitiveness.

I'm from "The tooth fairy is real," and "That's a lie,"
And "You're a good girl and I'm proud of you."
I'm from Rancho Grande on Christmas
I'm from hospitals and Italy
Ribs and Mush
From wielding knives in a closet
and screaming "mom!"

I'm from "Fairy tales do come true"
Now covered in dust
Sometimes displayed, usually not.
